Germany: Train derails, killing at least 3 people
Local police say that all of the injured have been transported from the scene of the train crash to surrounding hospitals. DW's Michael Watzke, who reported from the scene early on Monday morning, said that the remaining passengers had been brought to a community center in a nearby village. He said that the crash site was still a hive of activity. At least three people died when a regional train carrying some 100 passengers derailed in southwestern Germany. Around 50 people are injured, a number of them severely, according to Charlotte Ziller, the fire chief of Biberach district, who spoke to reporters at the scene late on Sunday evening. The regional express train departed Sigmaringen and was traveling to Ulm when at least two carriages of a regional train partially derailed in a forested area at around 6:10 p.m. (1610 GMT). The accident site is about 45 kilometers (28 miles) southeast of Ulm, which is located on the border with the German state of show hundreds of people, including firefighters, police, train workers and even the army helping at the scene of the accident as generators hum in the background. Rescue workers with dogs were also checking that none of the passengers were trapped under the derailed carriages, Watzke said. He added that there are plans to bring in heavy cranes on Monday to lift up the carriages. The regional express was pulling four carriages, he said, when it derailed. Richard Lutz, the chief executive of Germany's national rail operator Deutsche Bahn, said that everyone at Deutsche Bahn is deeply shocked and dismayed by the accident. "My heartfelt sympathy and condolences go out to the relatives of the deceased. I wish the injured a quick and full recovery," he said, thanking all the emergency services and volunteers on site.

Nearly 50 people feared dead after plane crashes in Russia
A passenger plane carrying nearly 50 people crashed in a remote spot in Russia's far eastern region of Amur on Thursday, with no immediate signs of survivors, authorities said. The aircraft, a twin-propeller Antonov-24 operated by Angara Airlines, was headed to the town of Tynda from the city of Blagoveshchensk when it disappeared from radar at around 2pm AEST. A rescue helicopter later spotted the burning fuselage of the plane on a forested mountain slope about 16km from Tynda. Videos published by Russian investigators showed what appeared to be columns of smoke billowing from the wreckage of the plane in a dense, forested area. Rescuers in the helicopter saw no evidence of survivors, local rescuers said, as the Amur region's civil defence agency said it was dispatching a ground team to the scene. "At the moment, 25 people and five units of equipment have been dispatched, and four aircraft with crews are on standby," it said. "While approaching Tynda Airport, the aircraft went around for a second landing, after which contact was lost," it said. "The circumstances are being investigated," it said. It did not make any immediate comment on what caused the crash. The state TASS news agency reported that the plane was manufactured almost 50 years ago. "In 2021, the aircraft's airworthiness certificate was extended until 2036," it reported, citing a source in aviation services. The Antonov-24 is a popular, Soviet-designed twin-propeller plane that first entered into service in 1959. Russia has taken steps to switch from Soviet aircraft to modern jets in recent years, but ageing light aircraft are still widely used in far-flung regions, with accidents frequent.

Wreckage of missing Russian An-24 plane found near forest, no survivors likely
Moscow: A Russian passenger plane carrying 43 people has been found crashed in a remote forest near Tynda, with no signs of survivors, Russia Today reported on Thursday. The Antonov An-24 aircraft, which went missing during a domestic flight from Blagoveshchensk to Tynda, was located by a rescue helicopter about 15 kilometres from its destination, Russia Today reported. The twin turboprop aircraft lost communication shortly before reaching Tynda Airport, with no distress signal sent, according to a source quoted by RT. The flight was operated over a 570-kilometre route across Russia's Far Eastern Amur Region. Governor of the region, Vasily Orlov, confirmed that 43 passengers were on board, including four crew members. Five children were among the passengers, he said. Video footage released by emergency services showed a Mi-8 helicopter flying over a heavily forested area as part of the search operation. The wreckage was found burning in the taiga, a dense and hilly boreal forest, which has made rescue efforts difficult, as per Russia Today. The An-24 aircraft, developed in the 1950s, is widely used in Russia for regional transport. More than 1,000 planes were produced over several decades.
